18/11/2011 – Impact day

On 18 November 2011 FOTAA organised over 20 volunteers to spend the day onsite at the Astor completing a number of support activities. This maintained FOTAA’s aim of furthering appreciation for the Astor Theatre and fostering a link with the community that both FOTAA and the Astor we hope will continue into the future.

01/05/2011 – New Season Launch Event

Last Tuesday (1 May) the Astor Theatre held its first calendar launch event. About 50 people turned out to enjoy some wine and nibbles before heading into the theatre to enjoy not only previews of many of the calendar’s coming attractions but also classic movie trailers (some with hand-painted stills) from the 1920s and 1930s Who knew Bette Davis was ever that young? Also screened were historical local advertisements, for example the Richmond Younger Set’s May advertisement for their 1934 Grand Centennial Ball (marking the centenary of people settling in Victoria).

Attendees were also treated to an informative talk from Tara Judah (PA to the Astor Theatre’s Proprietor) explaining how and why they program the way they do. If you’d like to know why the Astor Theatre put Labyrinth with Killer Klowns from Outer Space and why John Carter is a single session rather than a double feature we encourage you to click on the below link and visit the Astor Theatre’s official blog for an excerpt from Tara’s talk.
